Thanks! I had fooled around with the gear-wheel settings but it hadn't occurred to me that the color could be set to "make the spectrum invisible" .

The color of the spectrum had for some reason defaulted to white, and the background was white also. Seems like an odd default, but changing the color made the spectrum visible.
