Recording with Playback track

I am trying to record an instrument track, using a separate backing-track as a guide - i.e I have a basic band-track in Track 1, and I want to record a bass line into Track 2, while listening to track 1.

I have only been able to record onto Track 1.

I have found Forum posts which appear to say it can be done, but nowhere have I found HOW.

Does anyone have any suggestions, instructions?
