Apple Lossless question

When ripping music in iTunes, to Apple Lossless, it automatically uses 16 bit. After editing one of these tracks in Amadeus Pro, they ask me to choose "Preserved bit depth". There I can choose up to 24 bit. So now I wonder, am I right in thinking that choosing 24 bit WON'T improve the sound quality, since the original file is 16 bit already? Or should I pick 24 bit anyway, for the best quality?
